What is Platelet Rich Plasma Hair Restoration?

Platelet Rich Plasma Hair Restoration is part of a larger branch of restorative therapies that use platelet-rich plasma, otherwise known as Platelet Rich Plasma. Platelet Rich Plasma therapies are revolutionizing our ability to address hair loss. Platelet-rich plasma is an elemental building block of our blood that participates in a variety of functions throughout the body. One of those functions is healing and tissue regeneration. The healing capabilities of the growth factors, proteins, and signaling mechanisms, in Platelet Rich Plasma, are well-established and successfully applied to anti-aging skin care, orthopedic surgery and many other uses.

Platelet Rich Plasma is derived from the patient’s blood sample that is purified through a centrifuge. When processed through the centrifuge, Platelet Rich Plasma is removed from waste materials in the blood and separated into an injectable mixture. The Platelet Rich Plasma injection is a high-concentration of platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF), fibroblast growth factor (FGF-2), transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-b) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). The centrifuge processing increases growth factor concentration by as much as 700% for optimized potency. The extracted growth factors stimulate the development of new hair follicles by promoting neovascularization, which is the formulation of new blood vessels to deliver improved blood circulation. These Platelet Rich Plasma growth factors function as messengers to skin and hair cells, triggering renewed function and hair growth phases.

Platelet Rich Plasma Hair restoration therapy offers patients a simpler, more cost-efficient treatment option to treat the early signs of hair loss.

About Hair Loss

Hair loss, or alopecia, occurs in adult men and women from all walks of life. However, hair loss in women is not the same as in men. Male pattern hair loss typically presents as receding hairlines or balding of the crown. Female pattern hair loss is less obvious and occurs as thinning that begins along the part line. Platelet Rich Plasma therapy can promote natural hair growth for those suffering from either male or female pattern hair loss.

Each person is born with hundreds of thousands of individual hair follicles, which are the root stems in our scalps responsible for hair growth. Humans naturally shed nearly one hundred hairs each day, but healthy and active hair follicles regrow hair. Hair grows in three stages: anagen, catagen, and telogen. Hair follicles spend most of their time, about two to eight years, in the growth phase, known as anagen. Catagen is a short phase where hair ceases its growth; this typically lasts about two weeks. The final phase, telogen, lasts about three months, where hair follicles become fully keratinized and then begin to shed. There is no single reason that men and women lose their hair, hair growth cycles are impacted by heredity, stress, hormone changes, and the onset of alopecia.

The causes of the onset of alopecia aren’t fully understood but are linked to a combination of genetics and hormones. Hair that is shed is not the culprit behind hair loss, and hair follicles may be active even if there is no hair. Active hair follicles may simply be experience longer phases in between hair cycles, meaning their potential for hair growth is still strong.

MALE PATTERN HAIR LOSS and FEMALE PATTERN HAIR LOSS

Male pattern hair loss is known to appear in as many as 70% of men. Nearly 40% of women may be affected by female pattern hair loss. Typically, men experience hair loss at the age of 30 due to the increase of DHT in the system. DHT, dihydrotestosterone, is a hormone that damages hair cells and is linked to the onset of male pattern baldness. In women, hair loss has been linked to hormonal changes that may occur during pregnancy or menopause.

Ideal Candidates for Platelet Rich Plasma Hair Restoration

Men and women who are experiencing early signs of hair loss are great candidates for Platelet Rich Plasma hair restoration, the most advanced, least invasive hair restoration treatment on the market today. In the early stages of hair loss, hair follicles are still active and will benefit more from the restorative growth factors of Platelet Rich Plasma therapy. Those in later stages of hair loss will also experience improved hair growth but may require additional treatment sessions. Patients with a large number of small hairs along bare areas of the scalp will also benefit significantly from Platelet Rich Plasma treatment.

Those who are interested in preventative hair loss measures and promoting hair growth without invasive surgery are good candidates as well.

Ideal candidates for Platelet Rich Plasma Hair Restoration should be in good overall health with no underlying skin conditions. Patients should have reasonable expectations of Platelet Rich Plasma hair restoration, which you can discuss during your consultation. Platelet Rich Plasma therapy achieves noticeable, significant restoration of hair growth and increased hair counts. The results of treatment are not instantaneous and generally, take about six months before improvements are visible.

Platelet Rich Plasma Hair Restoration Treatment

The treatment is performed in-office and may take as little as half an hour per session. Platelet Rich Plasma therapy is non-surgical and requires no significant preparation. After a blood sample is drawn, it is placed in a centrifuge to remove the platelet-rich plasma. The sample size will depend on the size of the area impacted by hair loss and will be discussed at the time of the consultation. Hair loss limited to the top, crown or frontal region may only require a low volume blood sample. The centrifuge uses centrifugal force to spin the sample and separate Platelet Rich Plasma. The purified Platelet Rich Plasma sample is separated into a syringe and then injected directly into the scalp. Platelet Rich Plasma injections may be spaced about every half an inch across the scalp where there is thinning hair. The treated area of the scalp is washed and moisturized, and patients can easily return to their daily routine. Some patients may experience redness; there otherwise is zero downtime.

Patients are awake and resting comfortably during the treatment. The actual injection phase is quick while most of the time is spent waiting for Platelet Rich Plasma processing. For patients concerned about discomfort during the injection process, there are topical and local anesthetics. Most patients experience little to no discomfort.

Treatment Areas

Platelet Rich Plasma Hair restoration can affect hair regrowth in the scalp, as well as in the eyebrows. Any area of the scalp where hair growth is desired can be treated with Platelet Rich Plasma injections. Some individuals will require a combination of treatments to achieve the best results, which can be determined during an initial consultation.

Additional Platelet Rich Plasma Treatments

The restorative benefits of Platelet Rich Plasma therapy can be combined with other treatments to achieve better results. Microneedling can serve a powerful rejuvenating combination with Platelet Rich Plasma to help provide additional rejuvenating benefits to the skin as well. The Microneedling Platelet Rich Plasma therapy combination is sometimes referred to as a Vampire Facial. The microchannels that are made in the skin through microneedling will help provide deeper penetration of Platelet Rich Plasma growth factors which will help to promote further collagen production in the skin.

Hair Restoration Results

One of the main advantages of Platelet Rich Plasma Hair restoration is that there is no recovery period whatsoever. There are rare occasions where patients may experience redness or swelling, but this should resolve on its own in a matter of hours. The first signs of improvement will usually occur about a month after treatment where there may be a noticeable reduction in shedding hair. Then, patients may experience increase in hair length and early signs of renewed growth in bare areas.

Depending on the extent of hair loss and the goal of your treatment, a course of multiple treatment sessions may be necessary. The regenerative benefits of Platelet Rich Plasma can result in lifelong improvements in hair follicle health.

A typical treatment course may look like this:

  • After initial treatment, monthly follow-up treatments are recommended for the first three or four months and then spaced out to every three to six months.
  • A persistent and consistent treatment course that follows your hair’s natural growth cycles will yield the best results.
