The Science Behind CoolSculpting

Freeze away fat? It comes down to science. Fat cells freeze at higher temperatures than surrounding tissues. CoolSculpting technology safely delivers precisely controlled cooling to gently and effectively target the fat cells underneath the skin. The treated fat cells are crystallized (frozen), and then die. Over time, your body naturally processes the fat and expels these dead cells, leaving a more sculpted you. What makes CoolSculpting possible, is a patented cooling process developed at Harvard University. The idea originated from the observation that children who have a habit of eating popsicles tend to get dimples. Further studies have revealed that the cold of the popsicles affected the fatty “adipose” tissue in the cheeks.

That idea is called “cryolipolysis,” which uses controlled cooling to destroy unwanted fat cells. The CoolSculpting applicators use cooling temperature to destroy unwanted fat. This is possible because fat cells are easily affected by colder temperatures. While the surrounding tissues, such as skin cells, are left completely unharmed. Once the treated fat cells are crystallized (frozen), your body processes these cells and removes them from the body through natural elimination. Frozen fat cells undergo apoptosis, and the body’s macrophages naturally engulf and digest the cells. Clinical trials have shown about 40% reduction of the treated fat layer’s thickness after just a single treatment.

CoolSculpting Vs Liposuction

Coolsculpting is a non-surgical fat reduction alternative. Classically, the only option for those who wanted to target and remove stubborn fat deposits was liposuction. Liposuction is still one of the most effective methods for fat removal. However, liposuction is a more extensive, minimally-invasive procedure that may not be appropriate for everyone. Liposuction is a cosmetic surgical procedure that requires a small incision near the treatment area.

Anesthesia is also necessary to ensure the utmost comfort and to reduce possible bleeding. Following a liposuction procedure, patients will need to limit their activity as they recover. For those whose fat sculpting goals aren’t as extensive or for those who are not interested in undergoing a surgical procedure, Coolsculpting is an ideal alternative. Dr. Korman can discuss possible treatment options during the initial consultation.

The CoolSculpting treatment is a very simple and relaxed experience. There is no necessary pre-treatment or complicated preparation. Patients can schedule a treatment session in the middle of the week and even the middle of your workday. The length of your CoolSculpting session will vary depending on the number of areas being treated during one visit. We may recommend undergoing additional treatments in order to meet your goals. During your treatment session, you’ll easily be able to sit back, relax and say goodbye to stubborn fat. After we select the area(s) to be treated, the device is positioned on your body, and controlled cooling is applied. During your procedure, you may choose to read, check email, or even take a nap.

The vast majority of people experience little discomfort if any. The CoolSculpting applicator is placed on the targeted treatment area and using a suction technique the fat is pulled closer to the cooling temperature. While in the treatment, many people, read, watch videos, work on their laptop, or even take a nap. Following the procedure, typical side effects include temporary numbness, redness, swelling, bruising, firmness, tingling, stinging and pain. Rare side effects may also occur. The CoolSculpting procedure is not for everyone. You should not have undergone this treatment if you suffer from cryoglobulinemia or paroxysmal cold hemoglobinuria. This treatment is also not ideal to treat large amounts of excess fat.

Recovery And Results

The CoolSculpting procedure is completely non-surgical, so typically you can return to normal activities immediately. Often times, patients return to work immediately after their CoolSculpting treatment is complete. On the area treated, some patients may experience some redness. To resolve this concern, we recommend lightly massaging the treated region. You may start to see changes as quickly as three weeks after your treatment and will experience the most dramatic results after two months. But your body will still flush out fat cells and continues doing so for up to four to six months after treatment. The areas of the body that tend to experience the most significant fat reductions are the abdomen, and back. In the following months, inflammation of the treated area will continue to recede, and the body will remove fat cells. Research has shown that results persist for the long-term with no frozen fat cells returning to treated areas. Many people after seeing the results from their CoolSculpting procedure take even better care of themselves. However, if you do gain weight, you may gain it evenly all over your body, not just in the treated areas. To ensure permanent results, it is advised to maintain a healthy lifestyle. The results are long-lasting, and fat cells that are destroyed by Coolsculpting will not return.
