Hair Replacement Therapy, Men, Dr. Joshua Korman, Carmel By the Sea, Mountain View, San Jose

HRT (hormone replacement therapy) for men is a treatment that reintroduces essential hormones like testosterone into the body to improve its function. Aging comes with many obstacles including loss of muscle strength, low libido, and increased anxiety. Supplementing hormones can enhance a patient’s quality of life by helping them regulate some of the body’s most important operations. Sometimes called TRT (testosterone replacement therapy), HRT for men differs from HRT for women in the type and quantity of hormone it replenishes. Replacing testosterone greatly improves certain age-related symptoms that highly impact a patient’s physical and mental health.

What is HRT for Men?

Sex hormones (androgens) deplete with age causing men to enter into a clinical phase called andropause. It is considered the male equivalent of menopause, a more well-known phase of aging in women. Like the halting of the menstrual cycle greatly decreases a woman’s production of sex hormones, andropause is signified by a decrease in testosterone in male patients. Where andropause differs is that men experiencing a decline in sex hormone levels do not necessarily see a decline in gonadal (sex gland) function. (1)

A distinguishable decrease in testosterone in males can also lead to a condition called hypogonadism. Separate but often related to andropause, hypogonadism is often caused by a decline in gonadal function that results in lowered hormone levels. This can be primary (related to testicular function) or secondary (pituitary or hypothalamic) and results in abnormalities in the hypothalamus, pituitary glands, and testes. (2)

Testosterone production starts in the cerebral cortex, the part of the brain responsible for information processing. It sends signals to the hypothalamus, which in turn communicates with the pituitary glands to stimulate the release of hormones. When this function starts to decrease with age, it can lead to hypogonadism, cognitive functioning problems, and other health concerns. HRT is typically the preferred treatment to help men maintain a healthy and happy lifestyle.

How Does HRT Regulate Hormones?

Around 20% of men over 60 years of age have androgen levels that are below the normal range.

Hormone replacement therapy utilizes testosterone to regulate male patient’s internal systems. This sex hormone works within the body to manage muscle mass and fat mass, and contributes to good bone density. When a patient is deficient in androgens, these qualities typically start to become dysregulated as well. This causes weight gain, loss of lean muscle mass, weakened bone density, and noticeable changes in sexual function and mood. (2) HRT administers necessary hormones directly into a patient’s body through balanced and consistent treatment plans. It is a simple and proven way to help patients feel more like themselves throughout the aging process.

Ideal HRT Candidates

The ideal candidate for HRT for Men is generally in good overall health and has had a comprehensive evaluation by a qualified physician. They might suspect low testosterone after experiencing fatigue and sexual dysfunction, two symptoms that can warrant HRT for men. Candidates should also have realistic expectations regarding the outcomes of their treatment. Those with a history of prostate or breast cancer are not good candidates for hormone therapy.

Personal Consultation

Your private consultation will consist of a thorough medical examination and targeted testing to measure your hormone levels. This may require blood tests to pinpoint exactly what you may be lacking. You will inform us of your complete medical history and important health information to assist us in creating a personalized treatment plan. We will map out your current androgen deficiencies to customize your HRT.

Depending on your chosen application, we will administer your hormone replacements as injections or pellet-based treatments. At the end of this meeting, we will assist you in scheduling your follow-up appointments.

How to Prepare for Hormone Replacement

To best prepare for HRT, please discontinue any medications that may interfere with the treatment. This includes certain medications and herbal supplements that thin your blood. Follow Dr. Korman’s preparation directions carefully to ensure you stay on the right path. Ensure you provide us with a list of your current medications and treatments so we can make the changes necessary to improve your HRT experience. Discontinue all use of tobacco, nicotine, and alcohol to ensure the treatment takes the proper effect.

HRT for Men Treatment

Dr. Korman prescribes either injectable or pellet-based HRT depending on your preference and medical circumstances. He administers injections intravenously in pre-scheduled sessions. Injections are typically once every three months, but can also be weekly depending on your recommended dosage.

Pellet therapy utilizes very small and highly concentrated pellets the size of a grain of rice. Dr. Korman inserts them just below the skin of your hip or buttocks. These slowly release a measured amount of testosterone subcutaneously. Pellets typically last around 6 months, allowing you to go much longer between treatment appointments.

Recovery & Results

Hair Replacement Therapy, Men, Dr. Joshua Korman, Carmel By the Sea, Mountain View, San Jose

There is no associated recovery time for HRT for men. Both pellet and injection treatments are well-tolerated by patients. You may have tenderness or slight irritation around the injection site, but this subsides very quickly as your body starts to absorb the medication. These changes allow for a more comfortable aging process and a significant reduction of low testosterone symptoms. You will gradually feel the effects with increased energy and libido, muscle strengthening, and overall wellness enhancement.

FAQ

Is hormone replacement suitable for aging men?

Yes, hormone replacement therapy is often sought by aging men seeking to optimize their hormonal balance and address the symptoms associated with low testosterone levels. The decline in hormone levels is a natural part of the aging process, but hormone replacement therapy can help restore vitality, energy, and overall well-being.

What is a good age to start TRT?

Most testosterone replacement is prescribed to men over the age of 40. However, if you are younger and you experience any of the aforementioned symptoms, you may start TRT as early as your mid-to-late 20s. It all depends on your specific circumstances.

How is HRT beneficial for andropause?

Andropause refers to the age-related decline in testosterone levels in men. Hormone replacement therapy can help address the symptoms associated with andropause, including fatigue, decreased libido, muscle loss, increased body fat, mood swings, and diminished cognitive function. By optimizing hormones, hormone replacement treatment can reverse or alleviate these symptoms and improve overall well-being.

Does HRT have any risks?

Patients may experience acne, lower sperm count, and an increased risk of blood clots while receiving HRT. Your treatments are regulated and examined closely during the process to ensure you remain healthy.

Can TRT help me get better sleep?

Yes. Testosterone replacement often improves sleep and other neurological functions related to mood regulation, cognition, and self-esteem.
