HA: The Moisture Molecule

Skinvive is a rejuvenating treatment created by Allergan Aesthetics, a well-known and reputable leader in the world of cosmetics. It uniquely harnesses hyaluronic acid, facilitating more subtle results that avoid any possibility of looking “over-done”. The ultra-fine needles only penetrate intradermally, reaching the deeper layers of the skin, not the facial fat or muscle. Within this layer of the skin, the HA draws in water to provide hydrated plumpness to the cheek skin. Studies show that due to their structure and neutral pH, HA molecules can draw up to 10,000 times more water than their own weight! (1)

HA Crosslinking

Skinvive also contains 1,4-butanediol diglycidyl, an organic compound that serves as a cross-linker for the HA molecules, linking them together and creating a more stable substance. Cross-linked HA promotes a more refreshed appearance by stimulating the creation of new collagen for longer, minimizing fine lines and wrinkles on the surface over time. The molecules bind to existing collagen and elastin fibers and remain stable within the extracellular matrix, the empty areas between skin cells. (2)

Vycross Technology

Skinvive’s formula is also equipped with Vycross technology- a distinguishing feature and advantage over other HA injectables. This means that both long and short HA molecule strands are present in the injectable, optimizing its cross-linking capabilities. With this technology, injectors can also administer less HA into the treatment area and create a more natural look with less residual swelling. This translates to fewer injections and discomfort overall- especially with the addition of 0.3% lidocaine to numb the skin.

Overall, this FDA-approved treatment can serve to improve cheek texture in one of the most natural, minimally invasive ways possible. Unlike skin resurfacing treatments, there is no downtime required. Skinvive works more as a complement to your daily skincare routine, helping to prevent dryness and subtly improve signs of aging.

Candidates

The best candidates for Skinvive treatment are individuals who want to resolve early signs of aging, dry skin, and uneven texture. Usually, these patients are between the ages of 40 and 50 years old, but Skinvive is still capable of providing similar rejuvenating results in younger and older patients. For example, those in the 25 to 40-year-old age bracket may be more focused on enhancing their skin’s glow and hydration. Skinvive is suitable for all skin types: dry, oily, and combination skin can all benefit from its properties. However, it is not suitable for pregnant/breastfeeding women, individuals with a history of severe allergic reactions, and those undergoing a therapy that affects immune response. We advise patients to speak with their injector if they have a skin pigmentation disorder or are prone to scarring. Those undergoing a chemical peel or laser procedure should postpone any filler treatment until their skin fully heals. Finally, patients must have realistic expectations since individual results will vary.

Personal Consultation

The licensed injectors at Korman Plastic Surgery spend quality one-on-one time with each patient, ensuring that they understand the results they can attain with Skinvive. For first-time patients, our clinicians recommend a 30-minute consultation, but returning patients may only want to consider a 15-minute appointment as a refresher.

During this first appointment, our injectors may deliver customized advice on patients’ skin needs and outline the Skinvive treatment steps. They may review helpful preparation and recovery advice to get the most out of these revolutionary HA-based injections. They will also assess candidacy and review the potential side effects.

Preparation

The preparation for Skinvive is fairly minimal. Patients will have to stop taking any blood-thinning medications (even over-the-counter medications like aspirin and ibuprofen) for 1 week prior to treatment. These medications can raise the risk of experiencing bruising or bleeding during or after the treatment. Our injectors also encourage patients to stop smoking as well, since nicotine can constrict blood vessels and reduce the effectiveness of the HA. Our injectors will review each patient’s medical history and their current prescriptions to give any personalized instructions.

Procedure Steps

Skinvive treatment sessions only take 30 minutes or less. To begin, your injector will cleanse your skin. Next, they will mark out where they plan to inject, making sure to space out each location to promote smooth, even distribution. If desired, the patient can request topical numbing to make this minor procedure as comfortable as possible. Then your injector will begin administering small amounts of Skinvive into each area and switch out the needle every few injections to prevent inflicting discomfort with a dull needle.

Our injectors will skillfully apply the microdroplets intradermally at a 45-degree angle to ensure they only enter the skin- not any deeper tissue. They will use gloved fingers to gently massage after each injection, allowing the HA to spread to the areas adjacent to the injection site. After finishing, they will apply a healing serum to help the skin recover from any redness and inflammation. They may also apply an ice pack to reduce any swelling that will naturally occur.

Recovery and Results

Patients may experience mild irritation, itchiness, discoloration, and swelling that will take- at most- 7 days to subside. They may also feel small lumpy areas, but these will go away after patients apply gentle massage. Our injectors and aestheticians advise that patients refrain from strenuous activities for at least 24 hours afterward. They should also avoid sun exposure, hot tubs, and saunas for at least 2 weeks to allow the HA to optimally hydrate the skin. Patients should also avoid touching and rubbing the area.

If side effects continue past 7 days, our staff typically prescribes antibiotics or steroids to bring down any inflammation or infection. Sometimes, they apply hyaluronidase to completely dissolve the HA and erase its effects.

Even with these minor side effects, some patients see noticeable results right away, whereas others may see them gradually settle in over the following days or weeks. Many describe a radiant glow and an increase in skin softness. As a compound that is generated by the body’s mesenchymal cells and other skin cells, most patients react positively to HA. (3) Usually, patients can sustain their results for about 6 months.

Going forward, our injectors and aestheticians keep up with patient needs by personally advising them on skin care practices to extend the effects of Skinvive. In general, they will guide patients on sunscreen usage and touch-up treatments every 6 to 12 months.

Corresponding & Complementary Procedures

Botox

Botox is a popular injectable that erases dynamic facial wrinkles that appear with certain facial expressions. Botox treatments involve applying tiny amounts of botulinum toxin to impede highly specific muscle contractions in the face, releasing the surrounding lines and wrinkles to create a more youthful, revitalized look.

Chemical Peels

Chemical peels offer more comprehensive exfoliation to trigger new skin growth and regenerate high-quality collagen. Depending on the patient’s aging or cosmetic concerns, clinicians can apply a light peel for gentle rejuvenation, a medium peel for moderate improvements, or a deep peel for dramatic enhancements.

Morpheus8

Morpheus8 is a minimally invasive tool in which a clinician uses ultra-fine microneedles to stimulate collagen production in the skin. The device also emits an electromagnetic energy called radiofrequency that tightens existing collagen, further eliminating wrinkles and renewing areas of sun-damaged skin.
