What happens during the Tummy Tuck procedure?

Dr. Korman administers a general anesthesia for Tummy Tuck procedures. Depending on the extent of the surgery, Dr. Korman may choose to perform the surgery in a hospital setting.

There are two types of Tummy Tucks — a complete abdominoplasty and a partial abdominoplasty. The complete abdominoplasty requires an incision from hipbone to hipbone. The incision is made low on the abdomen. Dr. Korman contours the skin, tissue and muscle and moves the bellybutton to retain a natural appearance. The partial abdominoplasty is typically performed on patients who only have fat deposits below the bellybutton. Typically, the bellybutton is not moved during a partial Tummy Tuck.

How long does the Tummy Tuck procedure last?

Tummy Tucks generally require one to five hours.

When can normal activities resume after the procedure?

Patients who undergo Tummy Tuck procedures cannot drive after the surgery and need someone to be with them for at least 24 hours after the surgery. Activities may be restricted for six weeks, and some patients do not return to work for one month after the procedure.

Is there any pain after the procedure?

Tummy Tucks are extensive surgeries. Patients generally experience pain and swelling after the surgery. Dr. Korman may prescribe pain medication to help the patient remain comfortable.
