Tummy Tuck

Significant amounts of excess skin that rest on the stomach can be extremely unflattering and cause self-consciousness for both men and women.

Tummy tucks give patients a chance to remove their excess skin and create a toned appearance for their stomach. Men and women love how tummy tuck results help them they finally achieve a contoured stomach that they just could not have obtained with diet and exercise alone. To discuss if you are a good candidate for a tummy tuck, contact Dr. Korman to schedule a consultation at his Mountain View practice.

What is a Tummy Tuck?

A tummy tuck removes the excess skin that occurs from extreme weight loss or pregnancy. In a standard tummy tuck, Dr. Korman begins the procedure by making a horizontal incision from one hipbone to the other, directly above the pubic bone. The tissue and muscle will be tightened, creating a toned appearance for the stomach, and then the excess skin and fat will be removed.

Dr. Korman will then close the incision, leaving patients with a tighter stomach.

Patients who have lost significant amounts of weight may benefit from an extended tummy tuck. Whereas patients who have less skin excess benefit from a mini tummy tuck. A mini tummy tuck includes a smaller incision and is often performed in conjunction with liposuction. For further information about tummy tucks, contact our Mountain View office today.

Candidates for Tummy Tuck

If you have been pregnant or accomplished major weight loss, you are likely a good candidate for Tummy Tuck. Ideal candidates for Tummy Tuck are men and women who have excess abdominal skin and tissue that creates a soft, sagging, or bulging midsection.

In order to receive a Tummy Tuck, candidates should be within a few pounds of their goal weight, be in overall good health, and have a healthy remaining degree of skin elasticity.

We recommend that women wait until they are finished having children before receiving a tummy tuck.

Ideal candidates for Tummy Tuck are those who look forward to the results of their procedure but also have a realistic understanding of what Tummy Tuck will accomplish. Candidates will see their best, longest-lasting results with Tummy Tuck if they are dedicated to a balanced diet and an active lifestyle for the long-term.

Patients who smoke will be asked to discontinue smoking two weeks prior to and for twoweeks following their tummy tuck.

Patients who struggle with stubborn stomach fat, in addition to loose skin and strained abdominal muscles, will likely see their ideal results from a combination of tummy tuck and liposuction. Dr. Korman will assess your case and make a professional recommendation of your best treatment plan during a private consultation at Korman Plastic Surgery.

Tummy Tuck & Liposuction

Tummy Tuck & Liposuction are the perfect complementary procedures.

Dr. Korman often combines Tummy Tuck & Liposuction to address all the issues standing between patients and their ideal abdominal contours in a single, comprehensive process. Liposuction is a minimally-invasive fat elimination surgery. In order to perform liposuction, Dr. Korman will first introduce tumescent fluid into the area where fat elimination is desired. Tumescent fluid is a customized combination of saline, epinephrine, and lidocaine. The tumescent fluid will be given time to take effect. The fluid will cause the fat cells to swell. This makes the fat easier to extract from the body.

Liposuction is more than a fat-elimination procedure: it is a transformative body contouring procedure. Dr. Korman will extract fat using a thin, hollow tube, known as a cannula. He often artfully removes fat from the abdomen and flank during tummy tuck with liposuction in order to accomplish the preferred healthy, flattering contours.

In addition to tumescent liposuction, Dr. Korman offers his patients fat elimination with VASER ultrasound or SmartLipo technology.

Vaser Ultrasound

VASER optimizes fat breakdown with ultrasound waves. VASER accomplishes impressive sculpting outcomes: Dr. Korman uses VASER liposuction to achieve a muscular, toned look.  VASER not only helps to safely break down fat, it also promotes tightening of the underlying tissues.

SmartLipo

SmartLipo applies targeted laser energy to emulsify fat cells. The melted fat is then gently extracted from the body. The heat from SmartLipo has the added benefit of promoting tissue contracture. The result is an especially tight, slim abdominal contour.

CoolSculpting

Men and women who do not have loose abdominal skin, but do have a stubborn pocket of fat on their stomach are excellent candidates for CoolSculpting! CoolSculpting is a non-invasive fat elimination treatment that freezes away fat while patients sit comfortably in one of our plush CoolSculpting treatment chairs. The treatment takes only 30-45 minutes and eliminates up to 25% of fat! No downtime is required. The body breaks down treated fat over the weeks following the treatment. If you have frustrating tummy fat and a healthy degree of skin laxity, consider achieving your flat stomach with CoolSculpting!

How to Prepare for Tummy Tuck

You will receive personalized preparation and recovery instructions from Dr. Korman prior to your Tummy Tuck.

Your instructions will reflect the unique details of your treatment plan. In general, we advise our patients to avoid taking blood thinning medications and supplements for the two weeks leading up to and following their tummy tuck. These include non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDs) such as advil and naproxen. Blood-thinning supplements include vitamin E, turmeric, fish oil, and ginkgo biloba.

You will still be feeling the effects of the anesthesia over the hours following your tummy tuck. We recommend that patients arrange for a friend or family member to drive them home after their surgery. We also recommend that you arrange for this person to stay with you during the first night of your recovery.

Procedure

Tummy Tuck takes on average one to two hours to perform. The length of time and steps of your procedure will depend on the details of the treatment plan that you and Dr. Korman customized together. Tummy tuck is generally performed with the assistance of general anesthesia.

Tummy tuck is performed by making a single incision low on the abdomen. The incision is made in a location where it will be easily concealed within the bathing suit or underwear line.

Using this incision, Dr. Korman will access and repair the abdominal muscles. Liposuction may be performed to address pockets of subcutaneous fat. Excess skin will be removed. The remaining skin will be laid in a flat, tight position. The incision will be closed with sutures.

The majority of patients will return home within a few hours of their tummy tuck. Some patients may need to spend one night under the supervision of our staff before they begin their recovery at home.

What to Expect Following a Tummy Tuck?

To reduce swelling, Dr. Korman usually places an elastic band around the stomach and sometimes uses a drainage tube for any excess fluids immediately following the procedure. Normal activity may resume after a month, but a compression bandage should be worn to aid the healing process. Your individual recovery timeline will vary based on the extent of your Tummy Tuck procedure. If you have more questions about what to expect following your tummy tuck, ask Dr. Korman at his Mountain View practice.
