About Laser Skin Resurfacing

Dr. Korman uses the advanced Sciton Joule laser skin resurfacing system to help patients achieve younger, more radiant skin. With this product, he is able to use short bursts of high-energy laser lights to resurface the skin. Furthermore, he is able to choose the depth of penetration as he gently removes the layers of skin to reveal fresh, healthy skin.

This stimulates collagen growth, which is an important ingredient for minimizing the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines and maintaining youthful volume in the face.

Dr. Korman’s patients enjoy their healthier, smoother and brighter skin after just one laser skin resurfacing treatment. However, many patients choose to undergo multiple sessions, spaced weeks apart, in order to achieve lasting optimal results.

Benefits of Laser Resurfacing

Laser resurfacing is a nonsurgical, noninvasive treatment that can take years off the face or other parts of the body, including the neck, chest, and hands. Some of the benefits of laser resurfacing include:

  • Softens fine lines and wrinkles
  • Removes sunspots and age spots
  • Removes melasma
  • Reduces the appearance of scarring from acne or trauma
  • Corrects uneven skin tone
  • Tightens skin
  • Stimulates collagen growth for long lasting benefits

Moreover, laser resurfacing with the Sciton ProFractional laser allows for incredible results with minimal downtime. Patients can typically return to work right away after treatment. If they are concerned with the redness that arises directly after treatment, it can be covered up with makeup or patients can wait until it dissipates on its own. This usually takes 1-2 days. For this reason, patients sometimes choose to schedule their appointments on a Friday, giving them two full days to recover from their treatment. They’ll arrive at work on Monday looking like they just spent the entire weekend relaxing at the spa.

Good Candidates

Both men and women with visible flaws on the outermost layer of their skin may be good candidates for laser skin resurfacing. Common areas where the laser can be applied include the face, neck, chest, and hands. However, it can be used almost anywhere on the body.

Patients should be non smokers, since smoking can affect the patient’s ability to heal and the success of laser skin resurfacing depends on the skin’s ability to heal following treatment. If the patient does smoke, then they will need to commit to quitting prior to the treatment and during the recovery time.

Laser skin resurfacing will tighten the skin to an extent, but isn’t generally for use on patients with more extensive sagging or drooping skin. These patients may want to consider a more comprehensive procedure, such as a facelift.

Alternative and Additional Procedures

MicroLaserPeel

ProFractional skin resurfacing is often combined with Sciton’s MicroLaserPeel in order to offer the most advanced results for the skin. This combined system targets multiple layers of skin for total rejuvenation.

When combining these two treatments, Dr. Korman will start with Sciton’s MicroLaserPeel to correct the appearance of surface-level irregularities. Then, he will follow it up with Sciton’s ProFractional laser in order to stimulate collagen growth and extend and maximize the results.

Dermal Fillers

While laser skin resurfacing can reduce or eliminate the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, it will only have minor effect on deeper folds and creases such as marionette lines and nasolabial folds. In order to combat these deeper wrinkles, patients should consider dermal fillers.

At our Bay Area offices, we offer Bellafill, Juvéderm, Radiesse, and Restylane. These nonsurgical injectables can easily diminish the appearance of deep, static lines and wrinkles on the face that make us look, and feel, old. However, this treatment is not permanent and will require regular treatment sessions if patients wish to maintain their results.

Botox and Dysport

Botox and Dysport can be used to treat deep, dynamic lines and wrinkles on the face that cannot be treated by dermal fillers. These lines include crow’s feet, glabellar lines, and forehead lines. Botox or Dysport is often used in combination with dermal fillers to achieve overall facial rejuvenation.

Like dermal fillers, Botox and Dysport are not permanent anti-aging treatments and will require upkeep to maintain results. Patients seeking a more permanent anti-aging solution or those with more severe signs of facial aging may want to consider a facelift.

Laser Skin Resurfacing Process

When the patient arrives for their laser skin resurfacing procedure, we will first thoroughly clean the area to be treated. Depending on the patient’s preference, we can also apply a topical anesthetic for patient comfort.

The laser will be meticulously passed over the skin in order to achieve the optimal and consistent benefits at a microscopic level. Most people describe the feeling of the laser as warm, but very tolerable. The entire procedure should take less than an hour, depending on the size and number of treatment areas.

Following the procedure, patients are welcome to return directly to work. If they want, they can cover up the resulting redness with light, breathable makeup. However, they may wish to take a few days off from work in order to give themselves time to heal entirely.

Dr. Korman can help the patient determine the right option for them, depending on the treatment depth.

Recovery

There may be slight swelling or redness after this treatment; however, this should dissipate quickly.

Dr. Korman also offers his patients the option of hyperbaric oxygen treatments speed up healing and reduce redness. Dr. Korman believes that hyperbaric oxygen treatment after the laser process speeds up the process significantly, and the treatment is performed very close to Dr. Korman’s Mountain View office.

During the recovery period, patients should avoid sun. The outermost layers of the skin is removed so the new, fresh layer can burn very easily. This can be dangerous, so it is very important to avoid sun for a few days following treatment. Patients should also apply Aquaphor or Vaseline to their face following the treatment. This will help with resulting tightness and improve healing.

Laser Resurfacing Results

Over the course of the next few days following treatment, the outermost layer of the skin will begin to exfoliate naturally revealing healthier layers of skin. Patients will be able to enjoy their complete results one to two weeks following the procedure.

These results typically last about 1-3 years, depending on the patient’s skin quality and lifestyle. Drinking, smoking, sun exposure, genetics, and general health are all factors for lasting results. Dr. Korman and his staff are happy to work with the patient to develop a skin care routine that can help them maintain results even longer.

Many people see amazing results in just one application but may choose to schedule future treatments at two-month intervals for best results. At the time of the consultation, Dr. Korman can help the patient determine the best course of treatment for their body and lifestyle.

Consultation

During the consultation, Dr. Korman will work with the patient to determine if they would benefit most from laser skin resurfacing, an alternative procedure, or a combination of procedures. First, he will speak with the patient about their skin concerns and what they are hoping to achieve from laser resurfacing. He will then evaluate their skin, taking into consideration the patient’s desired results. He will also ask the patient about their medical history. It is important to tell Dr. Korman about any history of skin disorders, including rosacea.

If the patient is a good candidate for ProFractional laser resurfacing, then he will work with the patient to create a personalized treatment plan. This will include determining good treatment areas, additional procedures, laser depth, and the number of treatments. These are all important factors in achieving the desired results. Patients who work Monday through Friday may want to consider scheduling their first treatment on a Friday, so they can have the weekend to recover.

Cost

The cost of laser skin resurfacing is dependent on many factors, such as treatment size, additional procedures, and the number of treatments scheduled. After Dr. Korman has had a chance to meet with the patient for a personal consultation and develop a treatment plan, he will be able to provide an accurate price estimate.

Laser skin resurfacing is an amazing solution to uneven skin color, scarring and signs of aging around the eyes and mouth.
